Student Support Center's Two-Week Volunteer Abroad Program in Thailand, Promoting Sookmyung's ESG and Snowverse

Sookmyung Women's University Student Support Center's overseas volunteer group went to Thailand for a two-week trip from July 15 to 29 to volunteer abroad. The group presented Sookmyung's brand new model for global social contributions by including Sookmyung;s core values of ESG and Snowverse in their volunteer abroad program.
Sookmyung's Student Support Center was selected by the Korean University Council for Social Service (KUCSS) for its Summer University Self-Development Overseas Service Program after conducting overseas volunteer work last winter. Thirteen people participated in the volunteer group, including twelve currently enrolled students and one faculty member, and provided service to a total of 500 elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as 250 university students.
The group visited elementary, middle, and high schools, orphanages, and universities in the Maha Sarakham area, and conducted several different projects to close the educational gap.
They held experience-type activities, including art, music and physical education, for elementary, middle and high school students, in which the students actively participated. These activities included making worry dolls using fuzzy wires, performing traditional Korean music using the instrument “sogo,” and playing games with balloons and balls.
At Mahasarakham University and Chulalongkorn University, Sookmyung students showcased the self-developed metaverse platform "Snowverse” and used it to exchange cultures. At orphanages in the Maha Sarakham area, the group painted walls and murals to give a sense of emotional stability to the children.
The group also prepared a special time to talk about ESG, which is a core vision of Sookmyung. They also showed two universities upcycling technology to create new works from discarded bottle caps. Starting last year, Sookmyung promoted an upcycling campaign to collect and recycle bottle caps to make keyrings, chairs, etc.
Additionally, the volunteers held a one-day class on waste management and practices and upcycling goods with elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. One student who participated in the volunteer group, Ko Ye-na (Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature, Class of 2023) said, “Even though it was really hot, I felt energized by the bright smiles of all the kids, which in turn helped me do my best with all of our programs. I'm really proud to have given the students positive memories and personally experience such a valuable time at the same time.”
Dean Nittaya Wannakit of Mahasarakham University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences stated, “I'd like to thank Sookmyung students for providing a variety of programs for our students to enjoy,” adding, “It was a great experience and I hope they visit again soon.”
Moving forward, the Sookymung Women's University Student Support Center is planning a variety of volunteer programs both domestically and abroad, and plans to do their best to fulfill the social responsibilities of universities within local communities. An official from the Student Support Center said, “It was very meaningful to share differentiated sharing activities through Sookmyung’s specialized programs such as ESG and Snowverse. Our hope is that this is the first step in becoming global female leaders through this overseas volunteer program.”
