A student delegation from Sookmyung Women's University visited Bangladesh, a key global production hub for the apparel industry, to tour major industrial sites.

Nine students from the university’s Dept. of Clothing & Textiles and the campus broadcasting station SBS took part in the visit from January 9 (Fri) to 17 (Sat). They toured the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) and the Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ), both located in the southeastern city of Chattogram.

During the visit, students explored the production facilities of YoungOne Corporation within the industrial complexes, observing the overall production structure and operational processes of the apparel industry. At the KSI factory, which operates on solar energy, they learned about eco-friendly production systems and renewable energy-based operations. They also toured textile, footwear, and packaging production lines, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the apparel industry’s value chain.

Lee Han-joo (Class of ’24, Division of Media Studies/SBS), who participated in the trip, said, “What impressed me most was that everything—from fabric production to finished goods manufacturing and quality inspection—was systematically carried out within a single industrial complex.” Kim Ji-ah (Class of ’22, Dept. of Clothing & Textiles) commented, “Touring YoungOne Corporation’s production sites was a meaningful experience that helped me see the apparel industry not as a simple end product, but as a complex and integrated process.”

As part of the program, the group also visited Chittagong Independent University (CIU), where a student from Sookmyung’s Dept. of Clothing & Textiles presented her graduation project and shared her academic expertise. The students gained insight into global apparel industry trends and the management philosophy of the YoungOne Group, while also learning about the mindset required of business leaders competing in the global market.

Kim Young-sun, Dean of the College of Human Ecology at Sookmyung Women’s University, who led the delegation, stated, “The Korean Export Processing Zone, developed in a well-organized manner on what was once barren land, looked completely different from the typical image of a factory. It was an educationally meaningful site where students could directly observe the process of creating world-class products.”

Meanwhile, the visit was conducted as part of an industry–academic cooperation program jointly operated by Sookmyung Women’s University and the YoungOne Group. Since signing a memorandum of understanding with YoungOne Group in 2008, the university has continued to collaborate in fostering female talent in the field of apparel and fashion industry through field-based education and scholarship support.
