  • Any in-class exams, including midterm and final exams, will take place during normal class hours.
  • Having two or three classes per week is your choice. These are just sample schedules.
  • Students can receive course credits and official transcripts from Sookmyung Women's University. Further arrangements regarding course credits and transcripts can be made with USC and Ritsumeikan.
Important Dates

Sookmyung Women's University, Seoul, Korea (3 weeks) Intensive courses at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, exploring Korean pop culture firsthand. Students will engage with local experts and visit key cultural sites.


Korea-Japan Fieldwork (1 week) Cultural excursion visiting key pop culture sites in both countries. This tour bridges the academic experience between Korea and Japan, offering comparative perspectives.


Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan (3 weeks) In-depth study at Ritsumeikan University, immersing in Japanese pop culture scene. Students will explore Kyoto's unique blend of traditional and contemporary culture.


TFERN Summer School Course Timetable Details
  • Class Schedule
    Classes are held Monday through Thursday, with Fridays reserved for extra-curricular activities. This balanced schedule allows for intensive learning and cultural exploration.
  • Instructor Allocation
    Henry Jenkins teaches on Mondays and Wednesdays from 13:00-16:00. Ingyu Oh leads sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-12:00. Shinji Oyama and Keisuke Kitano teach on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00-12:00.
  • Flexible Options
    Students can choose between two or three classes per week. This flexibility accommodates different learning preferences and research interests.
  • Academic Credit
    Students receive course credits and official transcripts from Sookmyung Women's University. Additional arrangements can be made with USC and Ritsumeikan

Comparative Essays Students produce in-depth analyses of chosen pop cultures within a comparative framework. These essays will contribute to the growing body of East Asian cultural studies.


Academic Recognition Transcripts issued by hosting institutions, transferable to students' home universities. This recognition enhances the program's academic credibility and student career prospects.


Enhanced Research Skills Prepare students and faculty for advanced research in East Asian pop culture. Participants will gain valuable methodologies for cross-cultural analysis and interdisciplinary studies.
