Two open course TESOL (i.e., SMU-TESOL and YL-TESOL) international certification programs offered by Sookmyung Women’s University Graduate School of Professional Studies have been registered as official private qualifications approved by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training. Accordingly, it is expected that being able to include these two certifications on resumes will greatly help strengthen employment competitiveness.

SMU-TESOL grants English education qualifications for elementary school students and above, while YL-TESOL is for young learners from age 6 to 12.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a teacher training course that enables teaching English to learners in non-English speaking countries where English is not the native language, and is a core qualification recommended for English instructors. Sookmyung Women’s University has held a unique position in this field since establishing the first TESOL course in Korea in 1997, and has once again proven the excellence of its curriculum through the approved registration.

Obtaining these two certifications allows one to work in various positions in the field of English education, such as English instructors, English publishing, and edutech positions. Also, both certifications are linked to several overseas universities, allowing systematic learning of English teaching processes, and have the advantage of being able to receive up to 12 credits when advancing to a TESOL master's program or overseas sister university.

Sookmyung TESOL is preparing for the opening of the first semester of the 2025 academic year for both courses this coming February, and is additionally recruiting new students from Mon, Feb. 3 to Mon, Feb. 10 for the Children's Play English Expert (PL-TESOL) course opening in March.

Sookmyung TESOL Professor Kang Nam-joon stated, "SMU-TESOL and YL-TESOL's registration as official private qualifications by the Ministry of Education is a recognition of the excellence of the Sookmyung TESOL curriculum, bringing much pride to our 20,000 alumni," and added, "We will strive to nurture better English education experts based on our long history and reputation."
