Sookmyung Women’s University signed an MOU with Yongsan-gu Office and Korea Polytechnic University Seoul Jeongsu Campus on Tue, Dec. 10, with the goal of creating a safe urban environment for all local residents. They will work on creating a locally customized urban environment design, such as designing autonomous crime prevention team outposts in Yongsan-gu by applying the "crime prevention through environmental design" (CPTED) approach.
The MOU signing ceremony, held in the small conference room of Yongsan-gu Office, was attended by Sookmyung President Moon Si-yeon, Yongsan-gu District Mayor Park Hee-young, Korea Polytechnics Dean Park Seong-hui, representatives from each institution, and students and professors from Sookmyung's Department of Environmental Design and Korea Polytechnics Seoul Jeongsu Campus's Department of Visual Design.
The three institutions agreed to expand the base of public design in Yongsan-gu based on the principles of universal design, which is designed for convenient and safe use by all people regardless of gender, age, or disability. They plan to join forces in joint research and idea discovery to build an efficient government-academic cooperation system to create a high-quality urban environment.
This agreement is significant in that it presents a new paradigm where local governments and universities recognize and solve urban problems together. Sookmyung plans to propose and implement urban design policies to solve complex urban problems such as aging, urban regeneration, and multiculturalism.
According to this agreement, students from the Department of Environmental Design will participate in the Public Empathy Design Project as talent donation. Professor Seo Soo-kyung and nine students are in charge of the CPTED localization project for Cheongpa-dong, Yongsan-gu, engaging in improving the environment of autonomous crime prevention team outposts and Saemaul Association warehouses; developing design guidelines for Yongsan-style autonomous crime prevention team outposts; and developing graphics to improve graffiti and pollution on shutters.
Among these, the autonomous crime prevention team outpost and shutter designs proposed by students Jung Eui-yeong, Ko Sa-rang and Bae Min-ju are planned to start construction in January 2025. Professor Seo Soo-kyung said, "It was a very meaningful experience to realize design that is applied in society together, not just staying in theory."
On this day, students who participated in the Public Empathy Design Project received commendations from the Yongsan-gu District Mayor in recognition of their contributions to the development of public design.
Sookmyung President Moon Si-yeon stated, "It is very valuable that students studying environmental design at Sookmyung Women’s University can contribute to the local community by participating in the process of creating designs for Yongsan-gu by applying what they have actually learned," and added, "Sookmyung will continue to cooperate with Yongsan-gu in various fields in the future."
